PAM participates in IPU Webinar on “Women Leadership, Gender Perspective and Gender Approaches in Disarmament Action”

1 December 2022, online modality – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean participated in the “Women Leadership, Gender Perspective and Gender Approaches in disarmament Action” webinar co-organized by the IPU, Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), the Youth Fusion and the World Future Council (WFC). PAM was represented by Hon. Dumitrita Gliga (Romania).

 

Delegates explored international processes and parliamentary practices that can make peace and disarmament efforts more inclusive, effective, and sustainable. It also focused on gender approaches to disarmament and security addressing the different and disproportionate impacts of weapons proliferation and armed conflicts on women.

 

The event was aimed at increasing awareness on the topic, enhancing knowledge of the UNSCR 1325 Resolution on Women, Peace, and Security, and sharing examples of strong policies and parliamentary practices.

 

During her intervention, Hon. Gliga recalled PAM’s long-standing commitment to disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, as well as in supporting women’s role in Peace and Security matters.

 

Hon. Gliga expressed her concern about the recent indications that all the nuclear-armed states are increasing or upgrading their arsenals. Specifically, Hon. Gliga mentioned the “Russian dangerous rhetoric and threats of escalating the conflict to nuclear warfare”, which endangers the security of the European continent and the entire world.

 

Hon. Gliga highlighted the importance of including women among all relevant stakeholders contributing to international efforts toward nuclear and weapons control. “This includes empowering women and ensuring that their experience and knowledge are better recognized in conflict resolution, peace process, and disarmament affairs”. In this regard, Hon. Gliga recalled the importance of having more women in politics and diplomacy, as well as the key role of Education for women and girls.

 

Hon. Gliga concluded by recalling he role of PAM in enhancing women’s empowerment through its the Women Parliamentary Forum.//
