PAM discusses regional Security and fight against Terrorism during the 1st Standing Committee debate of its Plenary Session

2 March 2023 - Rabat, Morocco. On 2 March 2023, The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) concluded its 17th Plenary Session, generously hosted by the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, in Rabat.

The second day of the Plenary Session focused on the work of the 1st Standing Committee on Political and Security-related Cooperation.

The session was presided by Sen. Alia Bouran, Jordan, who reminded that peace and democracy cannot be taken for granted.

H.E. Ms. Margareta Cederfelt, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, and Mr. Mauro Miedico, Deputy Director of the United Nations Office on Counter Terrorism (UNOCT), addressed the opening of the session

Hon. Mirela Furtuna (Romania), Hon. Gennaro Migliore (Italy) and Hon. Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi (UAE), presented their respective Reports, namely “Geopolitical and Security Developments in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions” and “The evolving threats posed by terrorist and criminal activities in the PAM regions”, which highlighted PAM commitment to  the efforts of the international community in contrasting the Russian aggression of Ukraine,  and in supporting the fight against the presence of many terrorists, mercenaries, and armed groups in the region, including that of the criminal Russian Wagner Group, which contributes to further deteriorate the security conditions in the area.

Many fruitful exchanges, on a number of highly significant political issues, such as promoting the Two-State solution between Israel and Palestine, water and food security, humanitarian assistance and border security, contributed to advance the debate.

Several PAM delegates intervened during the debate, among them: Hon. Hend Humaid Al Aleeli (UAE); Sen. Mohamed El-Sebaei (Egypt); Amb. Majallie Whbee (Israel); Hon. Andreas Pasiourtides (Cyprus); Hon. Joana Lima (Portugal); H.E. Mr. Ahmad Ebrahim Khalaileh (Jordan); H.E. Mr. Fahmi AL Zarir (Palestine); H.E. Hamda Hassa Al-Sulaiti (Qatar); H.E. Mohamed Abou El Enein (Egypt); Hon. Hayel Ayash (Jordan); Hon. Salem Omari (Jordan);

Hon Belal Qasem (Palestine); Hon. Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi (UAE); and Hon. Mrs. Rahaq Alzawahreh (Jordan).

PAM MPs agreed on intensifying regional and international cooperation to effectively combat all kinds of terrorist financing, preventing criminal funding, deriving from illegal trafficking, as well as avoid unilateral actions in violation of Rule of Law and UN Charter, which undermine peace efforts and further exacerbate tensions in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

The two resolutions on “Geopolitical and Security Development in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions” and “The evolving threats posed by terrorist and criminal activities in the PAM regions” were unanimously adopted.//
