PAM contributes to the Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue

Marrakesh, Morocco, 13 June, 2023 – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) contributed to the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, organized by Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco, in cooperation with Religions for Peace, and with the support of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and of the Mohammadia League of Religious Scholars.

PAM President Sen. Enaam Mayara, President of the Morocco Chamber of Councillors, and Hon. Pedro Roque, Portugal, PAM President of the 3rd Standing Committee, represented the Assembly.

PAM shares the goals of the conference to address issues of inclusion and coexistence, and to promote peace and understanding through political dialogue, cooperation and parliamentary action.

While PAM President opened the event, in his institutional address, Hon. Roque highlighted, during the high-level debate, that cultivating long-lasting peace and fostering inclusive and sustainable prosperity were important goals for PAM. He mentioned the devastating impact of conflicts in PAM’s neighbourhood, such as the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the violent clashes in Sudan, and insecurity in the Sahel. He also stressed that the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions are extremely vulnerable to climate change, with droughts and floods becoming more frequent.  As a result of these environmental shocks, mass migration shall continue to increase, while on its side PAM will continue to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration. He advocated for women’s rights to be upheld, as a condition to build more inclusive societies.

PAM, he concluded, will continue to play its role as a key international actor and partner.//
