PAM attended MedCities’s Ordinary General Assembly

On 23 November 2023, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) attended the 19th Ordinary General Assembly of MedCities, an organization aimed to empower Mediterranean local governments and to achieve their strategic priorities, believing them to play a vital role in improving the lives of citizens in a sustainable way.  Hon. Rejhana Dervisevic, Head of the Bosnia-Herzegovina delegation, represented PAM.

PAM and MedCities concluded a Memorandum of Understanding earlier in May, with the aim to cooperate in achieving shared goals, in particular with respect to the promotion of social cohesion, circular economy, environmental sustainability, economic development, sustainable tourism, smart cities and the protection of biodiversity.

For a profitable collaboration, parliamentarians, local authorities and city officials must work together to promote peace, prosperity and the wellbeing of the citizens of their regions. Challenges and opportunities must be embraced by politicians, citizens and all level of local government including cities in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Climate change, rapid urbanization, migratory crisis and social inequality pose significant threats, therefore challenges we face are complex and require collaborative, forward-thinking solutions.

The best strategy is to share best practices, exchange ideas, and coordinate efforts to build more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities, as the cities and other local governments are the frontline of the cooperation and interaction between public institutions and citizens. PAM and MedCities’s cooperation is fundamental for national and international parliaments to address the real issues and concerns of the member Countries.

PAM remains committed to supporting the endeavors of MedCities. It will continue to advocate for policies that empower local authorities, promote good governance, and enhance the quality of life for the citizens. Together, we can build a future where our cities are not only vibrant hubs of culture and commerce but also models of sustainability and inclusivity. //
