The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), an Observer to the UN General Assembly, is participating with a high-level delegation to the 66th General Assembly being held in New York.

 

PAM is represented by the Vice-Presidents, Senator Francesco Maria Amoruso (Italy), Hon. Majalli Whbee, Israel, PAM Vice President and Vice President of the Knesset, Hon. George Vella, Malta, Head of the PAM Ad hoc Standing Committee on Middle East, Hon. Rudy Salles, France, PAM Honorary President and the Secretary General, Dr. Sergio Piazzi.

 

On this occasion PAM will attend, inter alia, the intervention of Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and Libya. Furthermore the PAM High-Level delegation will also participate in the Meeting on Libya, which will be held on the margins of the UNGA segment meetings, under the auspices of the the UN General-Secretary, H.E. Mr Ban Ki-moon.

 

The members of the PAM delegation will be presenting PAMs specific actions on issues addressed by the High-level Meeting on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases” on 19-20 September, and in the High-level meeting on the theme Addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication” on 20 September.

 

The PAM delegation will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia-Herzegovina, H.E. Mr. Alkalaj, to discuss the preparations for the meeting on the process of constitutional reform in BiH to be held in Malta, in cooperation with the UN and the OSCE, next 12 December.

 

PAM Bureau members will tentatively meet, inter alia, with High-level UN Senior Officials, such as the UN Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Political Affairs, H.E. Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe, the USG for Peacekeeping Operations, H.E. Mr. Herve Ladsous, and USG for Humanitarian Affairs, H.E. Ms. Valérie Amos, Mr. Ian Martin, UNSG Special AdvisoronPost-Conflict PlanningonLibya, Mr. Abdel-Elah Al-Khatib, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Libya.

The PAM delegation will also pay a visit to the US Administration and Congress in Washington D.C. from 21 to 22 September, to hold in-depth bilateral consultations on key issues such as the Peace Process in the Middle-East, the democratic transition in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, developments in Syria and appropriate strategies to ensure peace and security in the Mediterranean.

 

The Secretary General of PAM, Dr. Sergio Piazzi, will also address the high-level meeting on the role of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy” in strengthening freedom and democratic governance, to be held in Washington DC. The meeting will be attended by US Congressmen and high-level representatives of PAM member and partner governments and Parliaments, including those from the South of the Mediterranean. Dr. Piazzi will give an overview of  the role of PAM in assisting democratic transition and governance, notably in the Southern shore of the Mediterranean.
