Republic of San Marino, 4-5 June, 2023 – H.E. Mr. Enaam Mayara, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), and President of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, paid an official visit to the Republic of San Marino.

On 4 June, in the public audience with Their Excellencies the Captains Regent of San Marino, H.E. Hon. Adele Tonnini and H.E. Hon. Alessandro Scarano, PAM President recalled the important role that the country plays within the Assembly and its Commissions, as well as for hosting the PAM International Study Center, which has welcomed, since its establishment in December 2021, more than 25 researchers from 14 countries.

President Mayara expressed also his appreciation for a number of initiatives that San Marino is implementing at regional and international level, among which, the prevention and contrast to transnational criminal organizations, and the promotion of “ecological consciousness”. In this regard, he made reference to the recent adoption of the United Nations/UNECE Declaration of San Marino, on sustainable and inclusive urban design and architecture.

H.E. Mayara also assured of the support by PAM to San Marino for the forthcoming Forum of Cultural Diplomacy.

On 5 June, PAM President was received by H.E. Luca Beccari, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Telecommunications. The two officials discussed on strengthening cooperation between the Assembly and San Marino, on issues such as protecting the environment, promoting respect and tolerance, fostering security and stability in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

During the meeting, Minister Beccari, recalling the historical neutrality of his country, highlighted the importance of multilateralism in responding to peace and security challenges - such as the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine - while safeguarding and protecting the international principles enshrined in the UN Charter. He concluded by reiterating the full support of San Marino to the activities of the Assembly, including the project to establish a reinforced research capacity.

On the same day, President Mayara also met with members of the San Marino parliamentary delegation to PAM, namely Hon. Francesco Mussoni (Head of Delegation), Hon. Matteo Ciacci, and Hon. Giacomo Simoncini. They stressed the fruitful relationship existing between PAM and San Marino, which has proven to be strong and productive, based on positive and constructive dialogue.

In the course of the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between PAM President and the President of the Center for Disaster Medicine of the Council of Europe (CEMEC). The agreement foresees the implementation of joint activities and emphasizes the importance of ensuring the highest standard of training and preparedness to deal with all aspects of health assistance in case of natural and industrial emergencies.

The Assembly remains committed to assist the Republic of San Marino to pursue ambitious goals in terms of environmental, economic and social policies towards the promotion of stability and prosperity in all PAM countries.//
