PAM contributes to the 148th IPU Assembly in Geneva

23-27 March 2024, Geneva, Switzerland - Sen. Lyes Achour, Senior Member of the Algerian Delegation to PAM, and Amb. Gerhard Putman Cramer, PAM Permanent Observer at the UN at Geneva, represented the Assembly in the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Sen. Achour contributed to the General Debate on “Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding”.

In his address, he expressed severe concerns over the ongoing war in the Middle East, emphasizing the support of PAM to the efforts of the international community for the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2728 (2024), calling for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, as well as the urgent need to expand and sustain the aid flow into Gaza.

Sen. Achour also stressed the role of PAM as an internationally trusted partner and recognized mediator to address the multiple drivers of instability that are affecting global order, namely the malicious use of AI by authoritarian regimes, and terrorist and criminal groups; the erosion of international arms control systems and the proliferation of nuclear weapons; and climate change and environmental degradation as “multipliers that can exacerbate existing risks and tensions”.

In addition, he highlighted that PAM, since its inception, benefiting from a very fruitful and unique operational partnership with the UN, is taking part in the preparatory sessions for the Summit of the Future, which will be held at the UNHQ in New York, next September, aiming at bringing its own parliamentary contribution to the effective renewal of the global system of multilateral governance. //
