Constant interaction, clear communication and division of responsibilities will enhance sustainable development outcomes: PAM President Emeritus, H.E. El Enein
The unique role of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) in the Euro-Mediterranean region received further recognition at the international level when it was invited for the first time to participate and contribute in the 2018 World Investment Forum organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The high-level event, held in Geneva on 22-26 October 2018, brought together over 500 participants, including Heads of State and Government, Ministers, Heads of international organizations, global business leaders, parliamentarians, and civil society representatives.  The Forum is the preminent global platform for investment and development, where a wide variety of stakeholders discuss development challenges and investment-related policy making.

PAM was represented by H.E. Mohamed Abu El Enein, PAM President Emeritus and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General, and Amb. Putman-Cramer, PAM Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.

President El Enein in particular participated in a special tripartite session between Parliamentarians, Government and Business Leaders, dedicated to “Legislating for Sustainable Development”.
In his intervention,  President El Enein focused on how greater cooperation between legislators and private sector actors can lead to better targeting for sustainable development. He also referred to the experience acquired by PAM in bringing together parliamentarians and the private sector through the PAM Panel on Trade and Investment.

In order to find the right relational balance to enhance sustainable development outcomes, President El Enein stressed the need to ensure an open dialogue, made of constant interaction by all stakeholders, clear communication and division of responsibilities. “This is the only condition to make everyone feel as part of an integrated solution, and this reasoning should apply to everything, because nowadays challenges are global, and they need to be addressed by a plurality of actors in order to be solved effectively”, President El Enein added.

PAM participation in this event is part of the structured cooperation established with UNCTAD, which is a critical partner in the strategic programme launched by PAM and WTO for facilitating trade and investments in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
