PAM opens its 15th Plenary Session on-line

On 3 June, 2021, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) virtually opens its 15th Plenary Session. PAM President H.E. Karim Darwish will inaugurate the session with a keynote speech, followed by a message by H.E. António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations. Over 230 delegates from different countries and international organizations will join.

 

On the first day of the Session, several panelists will intervene. The debates of the 3rd Standing Committee on Dialogue among Civilizations and Human Rights will open the works of the Plenary and will be introduced by its President, Hon. Yana Chiara Ehm (Italy). Following the two presentations by Hon. Sandrine Mörch (France) and Hon. Marianne Amir Azer (Egypt) on Domestic Violence and the protection of Human Rights in an increasing digitalized society, delegates will engage in a parliamentary debate. The Session will continue with the Preparatory Meeting of the PAM Women Parliamentary Group facilitated by Hon. Joana Lima (Portugal), which includes an intervention by Hon. Lesia Vasylenko, President, IPU Bureau of Women Parliamentarians. 

 

In the afternoon, the Session of the 2nd Standing Committee on Economic, Social and Environmental Cooperation will take place, chaired by its President Hon. Pedro Roque (Portugal). Presentations by H.E. Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Hon. Ljubica Maksimčuk (Croatia) PAM Rapporteur on Economy and Hon. Alain Perea (France), PAM Rapporteur on Environment will tackle pivotal recent economic and environmental changes ongoing in the Mediterranean region.

 

On Friday 4 June, the meeting will start with the Session of 1st Standing Committee on Political and Security-Related Cooperation chaired by its President Sen. Alia Bouran (Jordan), followed by the address by Annadif Khatir Mahamat Saleh, Under-Secretary-General and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the presentations by Sen. Lhou Lmarbouh (Morocco) PAM Rapporteur on Security, and Hon. Gennaro Migliore (Italy) PAM Rapporteur on Counter-terrorism. During this Session, PAM parliamentarians will review the reports and recommendations on the critical security issues of concern for the PAM region, inter alia, the Middle-Est peace process and the evolving threat of terrorism. Throughout the meetings, space will be given for an extensive and fruitful parliamentary debate.

 

2021 PAM Prize laureates Award ceremony will take place at the end of this second day, abide by the Announcement of the results of the virtual elections of the new PAM Bureau and of PAM Presidency for the biennium 2021-2022. //
