PAM attends the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) attended the works of the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit, hosted in a virtual format by the Dutch Government and the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA).

The Summit took place on 25 - 26 January 2021, and gathered Heads of States and Governments, the UN Secretary General, religious leaders, and executives from international organizations, financial institutions and the productive sector, to discuss tangible solutions to the global climate emergency. The event consisted of several roundtables and high-level debates, and witnessed the inauguration of the first Ministerial Dialogue on Adaptation Action, a political forum aimed at enhancing international leadership cooperation to scale-up and accelerate climate adaptation.

PAM was represented by Hon. Pedro Roque, PAM President Emeritus and President of the 2nd Standing Committee, and Hon. Marie Noelle Gibelli, Head of the Monegasque delegation to PAM.

During the opening session of the event, the Chair of the GCA Board and former UN Secretary-General, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, launched a new comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda to coordinate wide-ranging adaptation efforts and leverage climate finance. The Summit also witnessed the establishment of a new Adaptation Action Coalition, designated to set the agenda ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), to take place in Glasgow in November 2021.

As remarked by several leaders during the event, the COVID-19 crisis transformed the global policy landscape, threatening the path toward the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. Building climate resilience is critical to effective recovery efforts, especially in those regions where the impact of global warming is already pronounced, as it is the case for the Mediterranean Basin.

The distinct participation of PAM to the Summit, as interparliamentary body, reflects the strong engagement of PAM delegates towards a green and prosperous renaissance in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions. In the next months, PAM will join forces with UN Agencies and other strategic partners to support Member States in raising their climate ambitions in view of COP26.//
