Statement by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the Humanitarian Crisis in north-east Syria

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Hon. Karim Darwish, expresses the serious concerns of all members of PAM for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Idlib and Daraa areas, with particular concern for mass civilian casualties, destruction of medical infrastructures, and new large forced displacement of population. Civilians cannot be held hostage nor used as pawn of confronting governments and their policies.

In line with the recent statement by the UN Secretary General, President Darwish reaffirms PAM’s position that there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict, and that the only solution is a viable and lasting Syrian-led, Syrian-owned and UN-facilitated political process in line with the UN Security Council resolution 2254, as recently stated in the PAM Resolution “Political and security developments in the MENA region”, adopted at the 14th PAM Plenary Session in Athens.

Hon. Darwish reiterates the readiness of the Assembly to support, through the instrument of parliamentary diplomacy, the political dialogue among neighbouring countries and world powers aimed at achieving a concrete and rapid solution to this crisis.
