The social, environmental and financial benefits from a better use of resources in waste management will be addressed by the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) on 30-31 May, 2014 in Caserta Italy.

The Conference “Waste management: collection, recycle, reuse: an opportunity for regional cooperation, productive activities and environmental protection in the Euro-Mediterranean region” is being organized by PAM at the invitation of Confindustria (Italian Federation of Industries), with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Caserta.

Parliamentarians and representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Industry of the PAM member and partner countries, as well as experts of the sector, regional and international institutions, the UN, the EC and the members of the PAM Panel, will discuss a number of topics with the aim to pave the way for the promotion of a comprehensive and coherent Mediterranean network for waste collection and recycling, open to all the countries of the region, for the benefit of the people of our basin, in terms of environment, management of resources, quality of life and business/job creation opportunities, as well as harmonized legislations.

Participants will be welcomed by local authorities and opening remarks will be delivered by Sen. Francesco Maria Amoruso, PAM President and Sen. Lhou Lmarbouh, PAM Vice President and President of the 2nd PAM Standing Committee. The inaugural keynote speech will be delivered by Mr. Luciano Morelli, President of Confindustria Caserta.

The First Session of the Caserta PAM Panel Meeting will focus on the Current waste management system in the Mediterranean: best practices, institutional design and technologies. Chaired by  Eng. Alessandro Ortis, co-Chair of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean, the session will be addressed by Dr. Giancarlo Morandi, President of COBAT (National Consortium for Collection and Recycling), Italy, Dr. Valter Facciotto, General Manager of CONAI, Italy, and Dr. Michele Zilla, General Manager of COBAT, Italy.
The Second Session will be dedicated to Collaboration and cooperation between institutions and operators and will be chaired and facilitated by Amb. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General. Prof. Giovanni Tria, President of the Superior School of Public Administration, Italy, Dr. Raimondo Orsini, General Director of the Sustainable Development Foundation and Prof. Luigi Carrino, President of CIRA, Italian Aerospace Research Center, will deliver the keynote speeches.

The closing session will tackle issues related to Regional initiatives, agreements and collective actions. The debate will be moderated by Dr. Luciano Morelli, President of Confindustria Caserta, and will be addressed by Hon. Ekaterini Sidiropoulou,  Head of the Hellenic Delegation to the PABSEC, Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.

The following day the PAM Panel Steering Committee will discuss and evaluate initiatives to be undertaken in the second semester of 2014 within the Panel Special Groups dedicated to Sustainable Development, Investments and Finance, Productive Initiatives and Job Creation, and Trade Facilitation.

The main objective of the Steering Committee meeting is to develop a sound programme of activities in order to highlight the importance of the primary role of the Mediterranean countries within the Euro Mediterranean Region, and to address concretely and immediately the core issues affecting the livelihood of the basin’s populations.//
