DIHAD 2014 – PAM representing parliamentary dimension in humanitarian aid and assistance

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) is participating at the Eleventh edition of the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid & Development Conference & Exhibition – DIHAD – 2014. PAM is represented by the Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi.

“PAM’s presence at this important regional conference aims at promoting the role of the parliamentary dimension in humanitarian aid and assistance, to explain PAM’s missions held in the Middle East in connection with the needs of the Syrian civilian population, and to explore further synergies among the major stakeholders in coordinating interventions by the international community”, Amb. Piazzi said.

DIHAD, this year dedicated to ‘Women and Aid’,  offers the ideal platform to share PAM’s commitment and experience in this field, since the overall aim of the Dubai event is to contribute to the further enhancement of technically sound and principled international humanitarian and development assistance.

On the margins of the DIHAD Conference, Amb. Piazzi is holding a series of bilateral meetings in view of the PAM upcoming activity in Antalia, Turkey, within the framework if the 3rd Standing Committee ón Dialogue among Civilizations and Human Rights. The event will be dedicated specifically to Human Trafficking and modern day slavery; The consequences of displacement on women and children in conflicts and PAM’s engagement in Human Rights.

Discussions were held with, among others, Mr. Nigel Fisher, UN Assistant Secretary General  and Regional UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Dr. Baige Zhao, Vice President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Dr. Ghada Hatim - ‎Executive Director at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Office in the United Arab Emirates, Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, H.E. Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Amb. William Lacy Swing, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration and Dr. Mukesh Kapila,  Professor of Global Health and Humanitarian Affairs at the University of Manchester.

PAM Secretary General, also took the opportunity to extend an invitation to these key personalities to attend and contribute to the PAM Parliamentary Meeting in Antalia, to be held on 24-25 April 2014.
