PAM Parliamentarians committed to assist economic operators in innovation and development processes in the Mediterranean

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) stressed the importance of political stability and clear and harmonized legislation, in order to create the best possible environment for SMEs to grow, notwithstanding the current international crisis, on the occasion of the Meeting on Innovation, Development and Democracy in the Mediterranean Area. The event was organized by the Innovation Knowledge Foundation THINK! in collaboration with the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) and the Research Centre MEDAlics , and was held in Milan, Italy on 10 October 2013.

Studies show that currently around 80% of overall economic growth is attributable to innovation and knowledge, two powerful tools that can produce sustainable wealth in the entire productive system. In particular, the strategic use of new technologies and more, in general, the development of a solid ICT sector, can be key factors for the wellbeing and the modernity of an economy.

At the Conference PAM was represented by Dr. Cesare Sacerdoti, CEO of the Crescendo Group, and founding member of the Executive Committee of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean.

In his address during the workings of the Conference Panel on Innovation and Development in the Mediterranean, Dr. Sacerdoti underlined how parliamentarians are committed to participate in these processes and are open to suggestions and ideas which they can promote within their national assemblies, in order to assist the operators in achieving their objectives.

The aim of the PAM Panel, Dr. Sacerdoti added, is to gather, around the same table, parliamentarians and representatives of the economic and financial sector (primarily investments promotion agencies, chambers of commerce, financial institutions, governmental bodies and agencies, business and consumers’ associations and international organisations), in order to assess, promote and support measures needed to contribute to economic progress and sustainable development, including in particular through legislative action.

The convention in Milan, offered the opportunity to present the report on the same topic jointly prepared by the Research Centre MEDAlics, the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) and the Innovation Knowledge Foundation THINK!, and at the same time offered a platform to encourage a debate between a number of stakeholders, including parliamentarians, on the potential of Information Technologies for the socio-economic development of the Mediterranean.

A bilateral meeting between THINK! President, Dr. Roberto Masiero, and PAM Secretary General, Amb. Sergio Piazzi, will be held shortly in Milan to establish a structured programme for further collaboration within the framework of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments.//
