Jordan – PAM former President H.E. Tarawneh appointed Chief of the Royal Court

Former President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), H.E. Senator Dr. Fayez Tarawneh, has been appointed Chief of the Royal Court of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Sen. Tarawneh has led the Assembly during the delicate transition period in the Arab Spring countries, and his political experience has been particularly critical in coordinating PAM’s role in the region and in establishing a course of action in collaboration with other international and regional institutions in providing humanitarian assistance and guidance in parliamentary issues. With regards to the Middle East Peace Process, Sen. Tarawneh met with the United Nations Secretary General, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, in Amman, in January last year, with whom common initiatives were identified in order to put at the disposal of the UN System and the Quartet, the Assembly’s unique network with the parliaments of the region.

Sen. Tarawneh has served twice as Prime Minister and once as Royal Court Chief. His first term as Prime Minister was from August 1998 to March 1999, after which he was appointed Royal Court Chief. The former PAM President, who also served as Foreign Minister, Jordan's Ambassador to the US and Trade Minister, became a Senator in 2003. He also headed the Jordanian delegation to the peace talks with Israel in 1994. He was reappointed to the Jordanian premiership in May 2012, during which period he maintained the dual responsibilities including that of the PAM Presidency.

At the inauguration of the VII PAM Plenary Session held in Malta in October 2012, Sen. Tarawneh underlined the positive track record of the Assembly and concluded that “PAM now needs to continue to consolidate its institutional and representative role for the Mediterranean through initiatives promoting democracy and socio-economic progress”.//
