PAM mission monitoring election process in Jordan

A High level delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), is in Jordan on a monitoring mission of the general elections being held today. The PAM Head of Delegation, Hon. Fernando Serrasqueiro (Portugal), is accompanied by Hon. Renato Sampaio and Hond Antonio Pedro Roque Oliveira, both from Portugal, and Mr. Mourad Youssry,   Deputy to the PAM Secretary-General for Assembly Affairs.

On their arrival the members of the delegation were welcomed at the Jordanian Senate by former PAM President and Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Sen. Dr. Fayyez Al Tarawneh. During the meeting Sen. Al Tarawneh gave a general overview of the electoral system and process, the new amendments to the constitution and also the introduction of the ten per cent quota of women in the new parliament. Matters related to the regional and international situation were also discussed in his capacity of President of the PAM1st Standing Committee on Political and Security Cooperation. Sen. Al Tarawneh,  also expressed his appreciation for the observation mission at the Jordanian elections, which underlines the commitment and the active role PAM is playing in the region. The PAM delegation also met Mrs. Bushra Abu Shahout, head of the International Cooperation and Observation section, at the Headquarters of the Independent Election Commission, during whihch they were thoroughly briefed on the technicalities of the monitoring mission and a list of all the polling stations was handed to the delegation in order to organize their monitoring activity.

PAM has also been active in assisting the democratic transition processes in other North African member states of the Assembly, including the  first free democratic elections held last year in Tunisia, where the citizens have started to experience a more participative role in the administration of their country.  PAM’s role is to facilitate the sharing and promoting the experience of democratic nations, in order to contribute to and support the proper implementation of one of the most fundamental rights of each citizen, in expressing a free choice from among a number of political voices in their respective countries.//
