PAM AWARDED INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ITS ROLE IN THE REGION
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) was honoured with the International Award ‘Mons. Pompeo Sarnelli’ in the institutional category, during a ceremony held in Bisceglie Italy on 8 October 2011. PAM was selected for its delicate role and commitment in consolidating the common cultural links, and for re-launching cooperation and cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean region.
The event was organized by the Cultural Association Mons. ‘Pompeo Sarnelli’, in collaboration with the City Council of Bisceglie, with the support of the President of the Republic of Italy, under the auspices of the Senate, the Region of Puglia and the Archdiocese of the cities of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie-Nazareth.
PAM was represented by its Vice-President, Sen. Francesco Maria Amoruso, and the Secretary General, Dr. Sergio Piazzi, who both reiterated the Assembly’s commitment towards the democratic values of the region’s parliamentary institutions and its support to the people’s growing need for a more stable and participatory society. PAM Secretary General also illustrated the strategic role the Assembly is playing in this period of change in many countries and also expressed the determination of the PAM member states to give all their support in these times of transition for the setting up of the new institutional frameworks.
“PAM’s role is to assist people and their elected representatives to work towards the well-being of every single citizen of the Mediterranean and this will be further highlighted during the 6th PAM plenary session which will take place in Palermo, Italy on 29 October, 2011”, Dr. Piazzi concluded.
