PAM mission to Tunisia

PAM mission to Tunisia

A delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, composed of Hon. Askin
Asan (Turkey), PAM Vice-President, Hon. Rudy Salles (France), PAM Honorary President, and
Dr. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General, has paid a visit to Tunisia on 13-14 March, 2011. It
was the first trip in a series of missions, that PAM has programmed for the coming weeks in the
region, including Egypt and Libya, following the events that have taken place in these countries.
In Tunis, meetings were held with the President of the Republic, H.E. Foued Mebazaa, and the
State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Radhouane Nouicer. The PAM delegation and the
Tunisian authorities discussed the current process of political transformation in the Maghreb
country and in the region in general. Discussions also touched upon the work of the High
Committee and the National Commissions, whose work will lead to the election of the
Constituent Assembly on 24 July 2011. The Tunisian Head of State and the State Secretary
expressed their interest in working in close liaison with the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Mediterranean, and they also showed their appreciation to any support PAM can provide both in
connection with the current process, and through a monitoring mission in the future, when new
elections are held.
Current issues were also at the centre of discussions the PAM representatives had with two of the
members of the Tunisian Parliament’s Delegation to PAM, namely Hon. Houda Bizid Blaeich
(PAM Vice-President) and Hon. Ridha Bouargoub, as well as the Ambassadors of Turkey and
France in Tunisia, and representatives of the Civil Society.
