Climate Change: International Parliamentarians to meet in Malta at PAM Headquarters to prepare for Copenhagen Summit

On 23-24 November 2009, parliamentarians from across the world will convene in Malta within the framework of the International Roundtable of Parliamentarians on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation. The purpose of the meeting is to reach a common position and draft a joint document to be presented at the forthcoming United Nations Climate Conference 2009, to be held in December in Copenhagen. In Copenhagen, a delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) will be attending, led by the President, Hon. Rudy Salles of France.
The Malta Conference aims to reach consensus on a common vision among parliamentarians on ways and actions to secure a coherent international framework to use disaster risk reduction for immediate climate change adaptation. It will also focus on discussions on the roles and responsibilities of parliamentarians in developing a coherent policy and framework of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation at regional, national and local levels.
This year the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean dedicated two Special Task Forces to studying, in depth, Disaster Management as well as Environment and Climate Change, which met in Cyprus in February. The Rapporteurs, Hon. Elissavet Papademetriou of Greece and José Junqueiro of Portugal, in collaboration with other parliamentarians from the Second Standing Committee, prepared reports and resolutions which were unanimously adopted during the 4th Plenary Session of the Assembly, held in Istanbul on 23-24 October 2009.
The international roundtable is a result of ongoing collaboration between the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and PAM, following from bilateral meetings between Mrs. Margherita Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Dr. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General.
The meeting, jointly organized by PAM and the UNISDR, has garnered the support of the Offices of the Prime Minister of Malta, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, the Minister of Resources and Rural Affairs of Malta, Hon. George Pullicino, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta, Hon. Louis Galea.
