Amb. Piazzi during his intervention in the Mediterranean Diet for an ecological transition conference: “It is necessary to act before it is too late”

On 9 October 2021, PAM, together with the UNESCO Chair of Turin, sponsored “the role of the Mediterranean Diet in an ecological transition” conference held  as part of the VII International Festival of Mediterranean Cuisine and the Biennale Democrazia in Turin, Italy.

Greeting messages by the Rabbi, the Parish Priest, the Imam of the Omar Mosque and the Shepherdess of the Waldensian Temple opened the event in the San Salvario district. The conference gathered a large number of participants.

On behalf of PAM, Amb. Piazzi expressed the admiration of the Assembly for the spirit of solidarity shown during the pandemic by the three monotheistic communities present in San Salvario. He praised their pursuit of peaceful coexistence and harmony as a model for the wider Mediterranean.

Amb. Piazzi recalled that, since 2013, the Mediterranean Diet has been recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. He stressed that adopting of a healthy diet, based on local and seasonal products,  would indeed result in fewer yearly carbon dioxide emissions. In this regard, sustainable diets such as the Mediterranean Diet could be crucial in the fight against environmental degradation, deforestation, and biodiversity impoverishment.

Ahead of the COP 26, the UN Secretary General sounded the alarm bell stating that humanity is on the brink of a catastrophe. PAM is also deeply concerned and calls on governments to make COP26 a success. PAM will be present in Glasgow at the COP26, to ensure that the concerns of the peoples living in the Euro-Mediterranean and Golf regions are clearly heard. //
